FAQs

What are the minimum requirements to study at a university in South Africa?

To study at most universities in South Africa, learners must obtain a National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a Bachelor’s pass. This usually includes passing at least six subjects, achieving 50–59% in four designated subjects, and meeting the minimum APS (Admission Point Score) required by the university and programme.

The Admission Point Score (APS) is a system used by many universities to measure a learner’s academic performance based on their Grade 12 results. Each subject mark contributes points, and the total APS determines whether a learner qualifies for admission into a particular course.

Yes. Many university programmes require specific subjects. For example, Mathematics and Physical Sciences are often required for engineering or science degrees, while Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy may be required for commerce or education programmes.

Most universities open applications between April and September of the learner’s Grade 12 year. Learners are encouraged to apply as early as possible to secure placement and accommodation.

If a learner does not meet university requirements, they may still pursue higher education through TVET colleges, bridging programmes, or diploma courses. These pathways can also lead to university admission later.
